This unique service has been operating since 1977 delivering library materials and services to the isolated community of the Far West of NSW. Without the Outback Letterbox Library isolated residents of the region would have no access to a public library.

Broken Hill Library Outback Letter Box Service

The Service.
The Outback Letterbox Service is a free books by mail/freight service to isolated people in Far Western New South Wales. It is a service fully funded by the Library Council of NSW.

Membership
When you join up you will be given some forms to fill in as well as a "selection" sheet. You need to fill out all of the forms as well as the selection sheet and send them back in to us.

In each bag you will receive a selection sheet for each member who wishes to borrow. This sheet needs to be filled in each time so that we know what to send you. The more specific that you are the more likely you are to get exactly what you want. You can access our online catalogue (click on the book in the top right hand corner) to search for material that you want. You can also tell us the general category you want, i.e. Australian history, detective mystery stories, country music etc. If this sheet is not filled in then you will not receive another bag until you contact us and tell us what you want sent to you.

This is a free service; we pay for the freight of your bag both ways. All you need to do is to pack your bag with all the material that you want to return, along with your completed selection sheet, turn the name tag over and then give it back to your carrier, or drop off point.

The bags are packed on a fortnightly basis. If you have returned your bag to us and are concerned that we haven't received it or have not sent you another one, please contact us.

Borrowing.
The borrowing period for Outback customers is six weeks. This allows for us to pack your bag, take it to the carrier, transit time and reading time. If for some reason you don't finish all the books in your bag, or watch the videos then you can either ring us and ask for an extension (this is another six weeks), or send back the items that you are finished with and on your selection sheet ask for the remainder to be extended. Items can only be renewed once, and only if no one else is waiting for them.

If something comes up and you need information quickly or urgently then ring, fax or email us and let us know what you need. We will fulfil your needs as quickly as possible.

Selection Sheets
Selection sheets are sent out in every bag.  If you need more you can print them out from this web site.  You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.
